Description
What could be more exciting than lighting up a single LED? Illuminating a whole array of them! LED matrices like these are 'multiplexed', meaning you can control 64 LEDs with just 16 pins. Managing that many pins can be cumbersome, and while driver chips like the MAX7219 exist to control matrices, they require extensive wiring and occupy a significant amount of space. Imagine how convenient it would be to manage a matrix with minimal wiring. This is the inspiration behind the LED matrix backpacks. These backpacks are designed for effortless integration with the Adafruit matrices, simplifying the addition of a vibrant display.
The driver chip in these matrices takes care of the complex work for you: it includes a built-in clock to multiplex the display, employs constant-current drivers for consistently bright and uniform color, supports 1/16 step dimming, and all of it can be controlled through a straightforward I2C interface. The 1.2" matrix backpacks are equipped with three address-selection jumpers, allowing for the connection of up to eight 1.2" 8x8 matrices (or any mix, such as four 1.2" 8x8s combined with four 7-segments, etc.) on a single I2C bus.
